Bridge of Sighs

Bridge of Sighs

Bridge of Sighs 嘆息橋 (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri)

bridge_of_sighs80.It’s a curved bridge, suspended over the Rio di Palazzo, being one of the most notorious trademarks of Venice.  It’s an enclosed bridge with 2 windows on both sides, about 5 feet in width and 15 feet in length.

The Bridge of Sighs was the place connecting the halls of the courts between de Duke Palace and the New Prison.  Its name is based on a marvellous tale which mentions in Serenissima’s time 威尼斯共和國 年代 the prisoners, crossing the bridge, sighing at the standpoint of seeing the outside world for the last time.  The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their life imprisonment or the execution of their death penalty.
